The emergence and application of automatic devices was in the 18th century. The formation period of automation technology was from the end of the 18th century to the 1930s. In 1788, the British mechanic J. Watt invented the centrifugal governor (also known as the flying ball governor), and connected it with the valve of the steam engine to form a closed-loop automatic control system for the speed of the steam engine. Watt's invention ushered in a new era in the application of modern automatic adjustment devices, and had an important impact on the first industrial revolution and the subsequent development of control theory. People began to use automatic adjustment devices to deal with the control problems raised in industrial production. These regulators are all devices that track a given value and keep some physical quantity near the given value.

In the 1970s, the objects of automation became large-scale and complex engineering and non-engineering systems, involving many problems that were difficult to solve with modern control theory. The research on these problems has promoted the innovation of the theory, method and means of automation, so the system control of large systems and the intelligent control of complex systems have emerged, and advanced technologies that comprehensively utilize the achievements of computers, communication technology, systems engineering and artificial intelligence have emerged. Automation systems, such as flexible manufacturing systems, office automation, intelligent robots, expert systems, decision support systems, computer integrated manufacturing systems, etc.

In 1946, D.S. Harder, a mechanical engineer from Ford, first proposed the term "automation" and used it to describe the process of automatic transmission and processing of engine cylinders.
Automation means that machines
Automation means that machines, equipment, systems or processes (production, management processes) achieve expectations through automatic detection,
